Region of Waterloo - Water Softener Report

Take a look at the report here

This was a very timely find given the recent pour poor (edit: I crack myself up) performance of our water softener. These results will come in handy!

The White Stripes - De Stijl

Img-20111111-00006

Here's a shot of the new record player and our first LP. There is something really satisfying about sitting down and explicitly listening to an entire album. I've got a huge library of digital music accessible through my Squeezebox, but it usually gets played on random and the "feel" of the album isn't there - it just becomes background noise.

So here's to sitting down, relaxing and enjoying music again!

And then there were two

Everyone please give a warm welcome to Oliver's new older sister, Zoe! Zoe is a 6.5 year old Labradoodle we adopted last weekend. It all happened quite quickly, but we know we've found an excellent friend for Ollie. The dogs are getting along well - I think both are starting to realize the other is here to stay! We're working to get them both to the same fitness level and trying to transition them both to the same diet. Turns out they're both kind of picky and strong willed! Oh, the challenges of dog ownership.

Stay tuned for more pics of the "kids"!

Stuck in the middle

Took a little persuasion, but we finally got Oliver to start across the wire-grate bridge on his own... He almost lost his nerve in the middle though!

A Practical Way To Estimate And Budget For Home Maintenance Costs

Media_httpwwwmoneysma_kcfxj

A decent article with some ideas on how to estimate and budget for major expenses. I'll have to look at incorporating this into my budget at some point in the future.

Notes for planting carrots

Img-20110724-00004

Last year we tried to grow carrots from seed and didn't have a single one grow. This year we started from seedlings. They come in those four-pod plastic plant containers with about 10 plants per pod. You basically have to untangle all the roots and plant them individually - a fairly time consuming task!

Little did I know, you should put GREAT EFFORT into ensuring the roots are straight when you put them in the ground. I wasn't so picky and ended up with the harvest you see here. They still taste good though!

More Bugs!

Ran out tonight to check if there were any actual bugs (instead of just pods) and found two of these guys…

Anyone know what these are?

Bugs!

Check out the spikey little beasties that have attached themselves to one of our Juniper trees.  These look like cocoons to me, some of them appear to have exploded with the little bugs inside, maybe from the heat?

If anyone knows what these are (and how worried I should be about my Juniper) please let me know!

AC unit is in

Img-20110711-00014

It was a bit of a rough day to be hanging around the house with no AC (29 celcius and 45% humidity), but now the house is finally cooling off. Looks a lot better than the old one and the installer even routed everything under the deck (instead of over like the last asshat).

If you're looking for an HVAC referral, let me know. I've got a good one!

Cool air please?

Well, it appears our A/C unit has bit the dust.  I’ve noticed the last few times we’ve ran it that it’s not exactly getting cold, and I remember it getting downright frigid at some points last year, so I knew something was up.  Had someone come and take a look.  Sure enough it has a leak somewhere as there is no pressure in the system.

Decided to bite the bullet and get a new unit installed.  Kills a few birds with on stone.  1. We get a new unit that we (hopefully) don’t have to worry about for another 10-15 years.  2. We can move it around the corner and out of the space we’re thinking of expanding the deck into. 3. We can run the piping under the deck (as opposed to over like the last moron did).

All in all, seems like a good idea and the guy doing the work is giving me a good deal too.  I’ll report back when it’s actually pumping cool air again!
